PReVAL organised Final Workshop

PReVAL organised its final workshop on 10 January 2008 at the Fondation Universitaire in Brussels, together with the TRACE and eIMPACT projects. In total 37 persons participated to the workshop.

In the morning, there were parallel breakout  sessions on safety assessment methodology from TRACE, eIMPACT and PReVAL and on the technical and human factor evaluation procedures proposed by the PReVAL project. During the breakout sessions, the different methodologies were discussed. The results of the discussions will be published in the final deliverable D16.4 of PReVAL.

In the afternoon, the PReVAL project presented the results of the analysis of the PReVENT evaluation results. The results reported by the different subprojects are very good., meaning that the subprojects have achieved their objectives. More research is however needed, in order to achieve statistically meaningful results and to improve further the technical performance and the HMI. More research is also needed on long-term effects of the system on driver behaviour.
PReVAL presented the results of the safety assessment of selected PReVENT functions. All investigated safety functions have positive effects on fatalities and injuries, but in varying degrees. In part, the magnitude of the safety impacts is affected by the circumstances in which the safety function is relevant, and the frequency with which corresponding accidents occur.

The TRACE and eIMPACT projects were presented, and the workshop closed with a panel session on the take up of the work performed in the projects. Mr. Minarini, the Commission representative, stressed the importance of having reliable figures on the safety impact for vehicle safety systems. The participants agreed that more data on accidents and driver behaviour are required.

To conclude, the final PReVAL workshop presented a productive platform, and the feedback received from the participants allowed the PReVAL consortium to fine tune the methodology developed and assist in the final recommendations of the project.
