First results for 3D CMOS camera


 

UseRCams is a PReVENT subproject, part of the Collision mitigation and Vulnerable Road User application field. It focuses on the development of an active 3D sensor, vital in providing improved obstacle detection and classification at short range. 

 

The sensors are especially suitable for collision mitigation, protection of vulnerable road users and blind spot detection. 

 

During the past months, the UserRcams consortium has been working on their first prototype for their 3D CMOS camera based on the UseRCams general specification deliverable. The feasibility of the test system was further demonstrated by a comprehensive evaluation in an experimental car reported by Siemens Corporate Technology and Siemens VDO Automotive. Different test scenarios have been studied to derive the overall system performance. Main scenarios were devoted to front view surveillance and pedestrian detection, which put the highest requirements on sensor performance. The measurements allowed also assessing and inferring the performance situations on side crash and blind spot detection. The car tests enlarged the results of the laboratory measurements and strengthen the conclusions of the planned improvements for the final camera system. 

 

This 3D test system design showed promising preliminary laboratory results and experimental tests demonstrating the feasibility of the new sensor approach but also revealing that further improvements for the 3D sensor system are necessary to meet the essential UseRcams requirements. The needed improvement for the final 3D CMOS camera have now been identified. In the final version, the sensor resolution and sensitivity, the optics and the laser will be improved. In the near future, UseRCams Consortium will focus further on the following points:

  • Refinement and adaptation of sensor specifications (front view surveillance, side crash detection, blind spot surveillance)
  • Advanced Laser pulse module development (Output power, Pulse repetition frequency, Electronics, Laser wavelength)
  • Improvement of CMOS sensor sensitivity

Siemens VDO Automotive and the OEM partners in the consortium are now setting up the different application scenarios for the use and evaluation of the final 3D camera in test cars with development of raw data software algorithms for image processing and classification of traffic objects,i.e., pedestrian, obstacles and cars. Preliminary results will be presented at the next AMAA conference in April 2006.
