Accidents at intersections happen when drivers perform inappropriate manoeuvres, fail to anticipate other driversí actions, or miss road signs or signals. The development of advanced sensor systems and algorithms can provide accurate localisation of the driverís vehicle and path prediction of other road users. Combining this with signal status communication, it will be possible to warn the driver of potentially hazardous situations.

 

 

Objectives

  • Development and testing of an intersection driver warning function on a demonstrator vehicle, based on precise relative vehicle localisation, path prediction of other objects and communication with traffic lights
  • Development of an advanced intersection safety system, using a dynamic simulator environment for assessing future active safety applications and sensor system requirements

Key Concepts

INTERSAFE is exploring the accident prevention and mitigation potential of an integrated preventive safety system for intersections through two parallel approaches:

 

Bottom-up

Integration of state-of-the-art sensors and infrastructure

communication within a demonstrator vehicle to explore

what driver assistance applications

may be possible in the short term.

 

 

 

 

 

Top-down
Development of an advanced intersection
safety system, using a dynamic driving
simulator environment, to assess future
active safety applications, and sensor
system requirements.
This also enables higher-risk scenarios to
be addressed safely.


Application of Results

INTERSAFE will contribute to intersection safety by:

  • Developing a test vehicle that can provide warnings to the driver based on :

- precise localisation using on-board sensors

 

Road markings (left) and posts (below) used by sensors for 

relative localisation within the intersection

 

 

- detection, classification and path prediction of all other objects at the intersection

- communication with traffic lights
- high-level map information

  • Creating algorithms and sensor/communication requirements for next-generation integrated intersection safety applications, based on advanced driving simulator evaluations for
    intersections
