SASPENCE


 

 

SASPENCE is developing and evaluating an innovative system able to perform the reliable and comfortable Safe Speed and Safe Distance concept, which helps the driver avoid dangerous situations related to excessive speed or too little headway..

 

In Europe, a considerable number of lives lost in traffic accidents is due to inappropriate vehicle speed (e.g. in curves) or headway. Within this context, the safety benefits that are expected from systems capable to appropriately warn and aid the driver in keeping safe speed and distance look very promising.
 

 

Objectives

The system will co-operate seamlessly with the driver through the most suitable HMI channels, and suggest the proper velocity and headway for the given driving conditions. SASPENCE is developing technical solutions for low-cost enhanced vehicle “intelligence” through an integration of components available in today’s passenger cars — preparing this type of application for a short-term market implementation.

 

Key concepts

  • Data fusion for reconstruction of the overall road and obstacle scenario
  • Comparison between a computed reference manoeuvre and the actual manoeuvre undertaken by the driver
  • Generation of warning messages for the driver and feedback on active pedal in order to reach a safe situation

 

Application of Results

  • Suggestion of a reference (“safe”) speed for the driver considering many different aspects (obstacles, road geometry, lane, etc.)
  • Early support to the driver in order to prevent entering into dangerous situations
  • Integration of warnings about unsafe distance (obstacle) and unsafe speed (road geometry)
  • Precise localisation of the vehicle on the road
  • Use of car-to-car communication to additionally transfer detected obstacle information
  • Computation of a reference manoeuvre, i.e. a driving plan computed by optimal control according to safe-optimal human-like criteria
  • Warning strategies as comparison between the actual driver manoeuvre and the reference optimal manoeuvre
