APALACI


 

The PReVENT APALACI and COMPOSE sub-projects address different complex and challenging aspects that have to be tackled in the field of Collision Mitigation and Vulnerable Road Users protection by following complementary approaches and focuses in a joint work plan.

 

APALACI focuses primarily on the protection of the vehicle occupants whereas COMPOSE mainly aims at the protection of road users outside the vehicle such as pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.
Within the framework of PReVENT, APALACI and COMPOSE have a common work package on “System evaluation and assessment”.

Advanced Pre-crash And LongitudinAl Collision mItigation system with pedestrian classification ability

APALACI is developing a system for advanced pre-crash and collision mitigation, including innovative sensor fusion techniques. The APALACI application is based on the detection of a collision event some instances before it occurs to improve the intervention of on-board systems and enhance the protection of car occupants, thus mitigating the severity of unavoidable crashes. In addition, a specific application of APALACI — namely Start Inhibit for trucks — prevents accidents at low speed by monitoring the frontal area close to the vehicle.

 

Objectives

Enhance protection of car occupants by developing advanced pre-crash interventions:

  • Improving the effectiveness of braking manoeuvres according to the detected collision scenario to mitigate the severity of unavoidable collisions
  • Improving the control of restraint systems for pre-crash interventions Prevent low speed accidents with obstacles or pedestrians in the frontal area of trucks

Key Concepts

 

 

  • Applications:
    • different types of interventions are activated progressively according to the estimated time-tocollision,
      namely collision mitigation (braking manoeuvres including the driver in the decision loop), improved pre-fire and pre-set control for restraints systems
    • Start Inhibit function for trucks
  • Detection ranges: from 0 to 50m in front of the equipped vehicle
  • Obstacles: relevant objects detected are vehicles, infrastructure, fixed objects and vulnerable road users
  • Sensor techniques : short and long-range radar sensors, laser scanner, mono/stereo camera and ultrasonicsensors are implemented and evaluated in different
    combinations within the demonstrator vehicles

 

 

 

Application of Results

 

The APALACI applications are demonstrated in different vehicles, integrating different functionalities and combinations of suitable sensors:

 

  • Collision mitigation and pre-crash functionalities using radar and video systems
  • Pre-fire application (pre-crash for reversible restraints) using radar and laser-scanner sensors.Pre-crash functionality, in terms of pre-set information for non-reversible restraint systems
  • Pre-fire information and control for reversible restraint systems and the pedestrian detection/recognition functionality using radar and ultrasonic sensors
  • Start Inhibit application for trucks including pedestrian detection capability
