COMPOSE


The PReVENT APALACI and COMPOSE sub-projects address different complex and challenging aspects that have to be tackled in the field of Collision Mitigation and Vulnerable Road Users protection by following complementary approaches and focuses in a joint work plan.

 

APALACI focuses primarily on the protection of the vehicle occupants whereas COMPOSE mainly aims at the protection of road users outside the vehicle such as pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.
Within the framework of PReVENT, APALACI and COMPOSE have a common work package on “System evaluation and assessment”.

COMPOSE develops and evaluates collision mitigation and vulnerable road user protection systems by means of  autonomous braking for trucks and cars. Its focus lies on rear-end crashes and collisions with vulnerable road users. An innovative sensor data fusion method has been employed to achieve a high degree of perception reliability, which is mandatory for this kind of application. Special emphasis is placed on the protection of road users outside of the vehicle.

 

The COMPOSE applications exploit the fact that technical systems are capable of reacting much faster than human drivers. This allows for an essential improvement of road safety due to innovative, vehicle-based collision mitigation systems and road user protection mechanisms by means of autonomous braking.


 

Objectives

 

COMPOSE is developing collision mitigation systems autonomous braking for trucks and passenger cars. In case of a collision, these systems can significantly reduce the kinetic energy at the impact mitigating the severity of injuries and possibly contributing to a considerable improvement of road safety.

• have redundant and complementary data

• determine when a collision becomes likely

• trigger the braking system for unavoidable crashes

 

 

 

 

Application of Results

The following safety functions will be integrated in the demonstration vehicles:

 

A collision mitigation system for cars. Main focus lies on the mitigation of longitudinal crashes with cars and collisions with pedestrians. In the case of an unavoidable collision the brakes are automatically applied.

The car is equipped with multiple sensors specifically selected to enable object detection,
tracking and classification of cars and vulnerable road users.

 

A rear-end crash collision mitigation application for commercial vehicles. The functional system  demonstrates autonomous braking and, within COMPOSE, is based on a laser scanner device. An extended sensor set is used within ProFusion2.

 

The function’s objective is to significantly reduce the consequences of an unavoidable rear-end crash by autonomous braking once a collision is no longer avoidable by active intervention of the truck driver.
