MAPS&ADAS

Digital maps have large potential for road safety to enhance or enable preventive and active safety applications by extending driver horizon. As a predictive sensor called ADAS horizon, the in-vehicle digital map is an important source of information providing look-ahead capability for ADAS applications and providing further information for on-board sensors to enhance environment perception.

Objectives

Within the PReVENT Integrated Project, the three-year MAPS&ADAS cross-functional subproject is developing, testing and validating appropriate methods for gathering, certifying, maintaining safety content to enable the provision of ADAS maps. A further important objective of MAPS&ADAS subproject is to develop and validate a standardised model and interface between ADAS applications and the in-vehicle map database.

As a cross-functional subproject, MAPS&ADAS role is to support IP PReVENT vertical subprojects which intend to implement the ADAS interface within their applications.

Challenges

MAPS&ADAS focuses on the following challenges:

  • Development and validation of a standard interface including data model and API between map data sources and ADAS / Navigation applications
  • Implementation of the ADAS interface by PReVENT applications (SASPENCE, LATERAL SAFEWILLWARN, SAFELANE)
  • Exploration of business models based on public private partnerships, in cooperation with the MAPS& ADAS Public Authorities Consultation Platform, to ensure long term integration and certification of up-to-date safety attributes into digital map databases

Results

MAPS&ADAS contributions to the IP level results are :

  • ADAS Interface ready for implementation by PReVENT applications
  • New methods for safety attributes acquisition enabling cost-effective provision of accurate and up-to-date digital maps compliant to ADAS application requirements
  • Provision of ADAS maps for PReVENT applications' test sites (Lower Saxony, Torino, Valladolid and Gothenburg)
  • Safety impact assessment of ADAS digital maps

Applications and key concepts

MAPS&ADAS will implement two applications in order to validate the concepts developed in the first phase of the projects:

  • ACC (Active Cruise Control) to validate the ADAS interface
  • Driver Warning System (HotSpot and Speed Alert) to assess the safety impact of ADAS maps

In addition to the applications developed by MAPS&ADAS, other PReVENT applications using the ADAS Horizon will implement the ADAS interface and use the ADAS maps in their respective test sites.

Events and Milestones

The MAPS&ADAS subproject focuses on two main milestones at the IP level:

  • The ADAS interface (Dec. 2005)
  • The ADAS Maps (Jan. 2007)

Additionally, the subproject contributes to a series of requirements, specifications, implementations, tests and validations over its 36-month lifespan starting in February 2004. The table below shows the different milestones at the IP level and at the subproject (SP) level.

User Forum

MAPS&ADAS subproject is based on activities initiated by the ADASIS Forum in 2002. During the lifetime of MAPS&ADAS, the ADASIS Forum is considered as the User Forum with 23 Members at the moment from different sectors (car manufacturers, ADAS supplier industry, navigation industry and map industry). The ADASIS Forum is open to all organisations interested in the development and the implementation of the ADAS Interface.
