Technical Abstract This deliverable constitutes the choice of a specific communication component for local danger propagation via inter-vehicle ad-hoc communication. Therefore, several wireless technologies have been analysed according to the functional and non-functional requirements identified in WP22.510. Previous developments and related results (CarTALK 2000, CHAUFFEUR, PATH, etc.), European frequency availability and relative regulatory constraints have been taken into account, too. The following basic wireless technologies had been chosen as potential candidates:
- IEEE 802.11
- Dedicated Short Range Communication system (DSRC)
- Infrared Data Association (IrDA)
- Ultra Wide Band (UWB)
- Zigbee
- Bluetooth
- Wireless 1394
- GSM/UMTS
- UTRA TDD
In addition to the basic wireless technologies, the Continuous Air-interface for Long and Medium distance (CALM) architecture is described in this deliverable and, though not a basic wireless technology by itself, its concepts are relevant for the WILLWARN system. With our system development, we will try to stay compliant with the CALM architecture. As a result of the analysis, a IEEE 802.11 WLAN based derivative for vehicle-to-vehicle communication is found most suitable among the currently available technologies. During the project, we will use 802.11a wireless modems with WAVE extensions as far as available. Extensions and adaptations that we may find appropriate for the WILLWARN system will be brought into the IEEE802.11ü standardization process via the car-to-car communication consortium (C2C-CC). Event though UTRA TDD, extensively analysed within the Cartalk 2000 project, has also been found suitable, we are not considering it further because of the lack of existing hardware.
