Executive summary


The goal of SAFELANE subproject is to develop a situation adaptive system for enhanced lane keeping support. SAFELANE develops the technology for a safe, reliable, highly available, acceptable and legally admissible onboard lane keeping support system for use in commercial and passenger vehicles on motorways and rural roads. The system reaction in critical lane departure situations comprises the control of warning actuators and an active steering actuator. The input to the system comes from forward looking cameras, which are supplemented by active sensors (e.g. radar, lidar); vehicle CAN bus data, digital road maps and a precise vehicle positioning.

The work under this deliverable is labeled “System Concept” and it represents the design of SAFELANE adaptive lane keeping system, transferring system pecifications to a real-world preventive safety system.


“System concept” follows a step-by-step methodology, starting from the a problem domain model, which describes the lane keeping support task in a lower level of abstraction and finishing with a solution in the problem domain. Having the solution in hand, the “System Concept” goes a step further; decomposes the system
to sensors, modules, actuators, etc. as different entities and describes dependencies and respective interactions.

The final architecture of SAFELANE consists of the three layers:perception, analysis and decision and action. The implementations of these layers are described together with exchange protocol, data specifications and accuracy. Finally, software specifications accompany the document, focused on the implementation of the
decision system.

 

Both tools – architecture and data specifications – will be implemented, tested and evaluated in the work that follows within SAFELANE sub-project. It offers, at the same time, the methodology and a good level of knowledge on modular and scalable system design to other PReVENT sub-projects or future PReVENT phase II activities.


The followed methodology takes into account recommendations from other PReVENT sub-projects such as ProFusion (for the design of multi-sensor safety applications) and MAPS&ADAS (for the use of map and positioning data); moreover the architecture is compatible with the LATERAL SAFE architecture concept, since it belongs to the same “lateral control” function field of PReVENT in order to enable future integration work.
