LATERAL SAFE
Confidential document
Executive Summary
Among many actions within the Integrated Project PReVENT aiming at an increased safety for all road users, Lateral Safe Vertical Subproject deals with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) for the prevention of accidents in the rear and lateral area of cars and trucks. For this purpose, a set of surround sensors are used to enhance the drivers perception and to warn him or her in cases, where he or she may be inattentive, distracted or overcharged. The suite of sensors used here, which can be thought of as a dramatically extended rear view mirror, resorts to different technologies. A Long Range Radar monitors the area behind the ego-vehicle. A Synthetic Vision Image Processing module covers a wider area in the same direction. Finally, a network of Short Range Radars (SRR) monitors each side of the ego-vehicle within a close range.
Data flowing out of these sensors is processed at many levels, and eventually merged by sensor data fusion, which wraps the perception task up, itself complemented with applications and HMI. On the HMI side, concepts from AIDE project were taken into account. In the following, all software (SW) and hardware (HW) components of the Lateral Safe System are being described. The document serves as a reference on the sensorial HW, processing units, controllers and actuator components of the Lateral Safe System as well as its SW components.
The document describes in principle the sensor adaptation to the common platform and processing software for obstacle extraction from the short range radar network, long range radar and a video-based systems. Structure and functionalities of sensor processing modules, synthesis software modules and common platform hardware are shown. The HMI mock-ups and prototypes are described.
The document is structured according to the HW components of the system. The functionality and structure of the SW components are being given in the sections of the HW components, on which they are implemented.
