D50.30 User needs, state of the art and relevance for accidents analysis

APALACI

Public document

Technical Abstract
Pedestrian-vehicle accidents account for the second largest source of automotive related fatality and injury worldwide. New safety systems with the possibility of reducing the severity of pedestrian accidents are under development, e.g. external airbag and start inhibit. All such systems require knowledge about pedestrian presence for correct activation. Sensor technology and the possibility to fuse different sensors will make detection of pedestrians in the close vicinity of the vehicle possible.

Around two thirds of all accidents happen in the frontal region of the vehicle. The work within APALACI is concentrated to this area and involves applications to cover the safety for people outside the vehicle (e.g. Start Inhibit) as well as for the driver and passenger in the car (e.g. Collision Mitigation).

The APALACI project intends to specify, build and evaluate five different applications within the area of pre-crash and collision mitigation. The goal is also to develop sensor fusion techniques to make the applications possible.

This deliverable 50.30 covers User Needs, State of the Art and Relevance for Accidents and will form an input to the WP 400 Functional requirements and system specification
