Technical Abstract


The objectives of the deliverable "Requirements for Preventive Safety Applications" are

(i) to deduce and justify the functional requirements from previous work in intelligent vehicle area, current knowledge of driver behaviour, accident theories and accidentology, road traffic safety situation in European Union, road traffic safety programs both by EC, member states and the Integrated Safety Programme of the automotive industry

(ii) describe the PReVENT vision

(iii) describe functional requirements for various applications to be developed and

(iv) explain the integration aspects of the project.

 

The four functional areas of the Integrated Project and their sub-projects are introduced. The vision of PReVENT is described paving way to a safety zone around vehicles. The vision is deduced both from previous work in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems area and commitment to better safety expressed both by EC, individual member states and the automotive industry. The key concepts describing preventive safety area are explained and clarified. Driver behaviour is generally found as error-prone and advanced driver assistance with continuous alert is regarded as very beneficial to safety, especially when the most effective methods of conventional traffic safety work have been mainly exhausted until now.

PReVENT applications address both most serious and frequent accident scenarios. The ultimate goal is to make future vehicles practically accident-free. Preventive safety applications cover both longitudinal and lateral control of the vehicle. To achieve this, the driver, driving conditions around the vehicle, travel speed, vehicle lateral position, longitudinal control, driving conditions also beyond the field of vision and very precise positioning of vehicles in intersections need to be monitored. The aim of assistance systems is to keep the driver in the control loop as far as possible. Eventually, in the event of an unavoidable accident, the collision mitigation systems would help the occupants and vulnerable road users survive in the crash. The project work will be validated through common procedures to be further developed in the course of the project.

The integration in the project means a first step towards a common platform for applications to show a safety zone around a vehicle. This will demonstrated by the INSAFES sub-project. Moreover, integration means here seamless time to accident horizon covered by various applications ranging from the very first milliseconds of the impact of the collision mitigation applications to about 10 seconds and beyond by means of advanced positioning and vehicle-to-vehicle communication technologies as well as common methods to develop preventive safety applications and validate the project results. Practically, all vertical PReVENT sub-projects strive consistently to improve electronic perception performance by multi-sensor approaches and sensor data fusion. This subject is additionally addressed by the horizontal sub-project ProFusion in a more fundamental and general manner - ultimately contributing to a greater integration within PReVENT.
