Once a vehicle is equipped with a navigation system, the available map data information can be used not only for routing purposes but also to support other in-vehicle sub-systems. The area of possible applications reaches from headlight control up to preventive safety and accident mitigating applications. Ford Research engineers have developed a system architecture that provides enhanced map data as well as vehicle route prediction for the road segments ahead of the vehicle, presented in this paper as related to MAPS&ADAS (not an official PReVENT paper).
